Joanna's Experience
Joanna has nearly fifteen years experience in public policy. Her work includes transforming the family violence system in Aotearoa New Zealand, and leading teams to address child welfare, early childhood education and correctional policy in British Columbia, Canada. Her experience spans the globe, from early days as a political intern in Washington DC, to a research assistant at the University of Oxford, parliamentary reporting in New Zealand, and advancing New Zealand’s interests at the United Nations. The depth and breadth of her experience allows her to understand the nuance of complex policy areas, along with the impacts on the people affected by policy.
Joanna has been honoured to collaborate closely with Indigenous communities throughout her career. She advised on Aotearoa New Zealand’s endorsement of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People at the United Nations in 2010. She has partnered with Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand, and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit in Canada on a range of justice and child welfare issues. She respectfully acknowledges she is a visitor on Indigenous land and is continuously learning about the Indigenous experience.
Joanna holds a Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford in England. She also holds a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in International Relations and Political Science from Te Herenga Waka (Victoria University of Wellington) in Aotearoa New Zealand. While she is grateful for the education she has had the privilege to access, she is also deeply humbled by the extent of the teachings she has received from the communities she serves.

About Me.
Joanna is a Pākehā immigrant from Aotearoa New Zealand, settling in Canada in 2017.
She has been grateful to call Tk̓emlúps home since 2023. Born in England, her cross-cultural heritage gives her a deep curiosity about how different cultures engage with the world which guides both her life and her work.
Spending time immersed in Indigenous, Yoga and Buddhist communities has guided Joanna towards living a life connected to herself, her community and her natural environment. In her leisure time, Joanna enjoys being with friends and family, and out on the land, hiking, skiing, or on horseback. She is a registered yoga teacher and mindfulness practitioner.
